District Court Level Discription
The Court of Resident Magistrate  and District Court is third level in the Judiciary justice delivery hierarchy. The Court of Resident Magistrate is established by an order of the Chief Justice under section 5 (1) of the Magistrates’ Courts Act [CAP 11 R.E 2019]. It exercises jurisdiction over the area specified by the Order establishing it. It has original jurisdiction in both civil and criminal matters. The District Court is established under section 4(1) of the Magistrates’ Courts Act, [CAP 11 R.E 2019]. It exercises jurisdiction within the district of its establishment or as may be extended by the Chief Justice. In addition to its original jurisdiction, it has both appellate and revisional jurisdiction over matters originating in the Primary Court.
